Bunkers of Kiev Hardened Shelter Area
During the early days of WWII, responding to the German invasion of their country, the Ukraine built a series of concrete bunkers in concentric rings that surrounded Kiev. In memory of this desperate defense measure, an award was developed to encourage radio "expedition" operations from within or near the site of the bunkers which still exist, albeit as overgrown and empty memorials of the horrors of the "Great Patriotic War".
Contact at least 10 different expeditions, which operate from the location of the BUNKERs of the Kiev hardened shelter area. All bands and modes OK. On 1.8 MHz and VHF/UHF, only 5 contacts are needed. The official list of valid bunkers is found on a downloadable file called "Pipa's Map" and available on the website. No use of repeaters or non-radio services using ECHO-LINK or similar methods. The sponors suggest using QRP power levels, similar to that used during the actual combat operations of the time. The bunker station will send the following contact data which is required that you include in your application: RST - OPERATOR NAME - QTH (Bunker Number from Pipa's List).
Refer to the website for rules applicable for activators. Look for activity from the operators between June 22 to September 19 of each year, since 2008. The applications should be in the form of an e-mail to the award manager UT4UBL addressed to email@example.com. SWL OK, but must include the call sign of the calling station and the bunker data.
The diploma is sent only by E-MAIL and is free-of-charge Your award will show an image the actual BUNKERs you worked, the brief information on these structures, and also information on the competitor, number of the diploma, date, signature of the members of expeditions if possible.
Additional information about expeditions, etc found at:http://qrp.ham.net.ua/ and http://krc.ham.net.ua/

Ukraine, Russia and Central Asia
The word kurgan is of Turkic origin borrowed from Russian language. In Ukraine and Russia, there are royal kurgans of Varangian chieftains, such as the Black Grave in Ukrainian Chernihiv (excavated in the 19th century), Oleg's Grave in Russian Staraya Ladoga, and vast, intricate Rurik's Hill near Russian Rurikovo gorodische. Other important kurgans are found in Ukraine and South Russia and are associated with much more ancient steppe peoples, notably the Scythians (e.g.,Chortomlyk, Pazyryk) and Proto-Indo-Europeans (e.g., Ipatovo) The steppe cultures found in Ukraine and South Russia naturally continue into Central Asia, in particular Kazakhstan.
